January 31, 2023 | 4 min read

Most of the 911 systems across the Maritimes, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and parts of Prince Edward Island, were offline for more than two hours on Wednesday, January 31, according to reports from local police and emergency services.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia RCMP confirmed they were experiencing technical difficulties with their 911 system for several hours. The outage affected all 911 calls and dispatch services throughout the province.

New Brunswick

In New Brunswick, 911 service was disrupted around 9:30 a.m. Police, NB Power, and city halls in the province reported outages. The situation was resolved by around 11:45 a.m. local time.

Prince Edward Island

The 911 service outage in Prince Edward Island was limited to a specific area of the province. The RCMP in the province reported the outage at around 9:30 a.m., and it was resolved by 11:30 a.m. PST.

Other Affected Areas

Similar 911 outages were reported in several states across the United States, including California and North Carolina, due to an AT&T network issue. The outage affected 911 service in multiple counties and cities.

Law enforcement agencies in at least four states - California, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas - reported 911 service interruptions on Wednesday.

The outages caused significant concern and disruption for residents and emergency responders. Authorities urge the public to use alternate means of contacting emergency services, such as going to the nearest police station or hospital, if they are experiencing difficulties reaching 911.
